Super Mario Bros. 3 - NES

Review of the best selling cartridge game in history

Title:  Super Mario Bros. 3

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 1990

Console: NES

Genre: Adventure

Number of Players: 2

Choose a 1 or 2 player game and you'll begin in the Grass Land.

World 1 - Grass Land

Once you collect the leaf in world 1 stage 1, fly up and find a question mark block which contains a free guy.

When you clear a stage, you randomly receive a card.

Collect three of a kind and receive a big bonus.  Three stars gets you 5 free guys!

Otherwise, collecting three cards gets you one free guy.

SECRET WHISTLE!

In World 1 Stage 3, find the white platform in that stage, stand on it, and duck for about 5 seconds or so.  Mario will fall through and be behind everything in the stage.  Run as fast as you can to the end of the stage.
If you did the trick correctly, you will receive a whistle that will let you warp to other Worlds (see "WARP" near the bottom).

Throughout your adventure, you'll come across some games that you can play and get rewards for.  In this game, you must match similar cards.

This game works like a slot machine.  Try to align an object and receive free guys.

In two player mode, you can challenge each other in this remake of the classic Mario Bros. Arcade Game.  You can push each other into enemies, jump on each others' heads, and even steal the cards that the player collected at the end of each stage.

THE SECOND SECRET WHISTLE!

In the fortress of World 1, fly up to the ceiling and make your way to the right.  Once you move all the way

to the right, press up.  You'll find yourself in a secret room with a treasure.  The treasure contains the

second secret whistle.

At the beginning of Stage 5 of World 1, press down to slide through all the beetles to get rid of them with ease.

Once you reach the castle in World 1, you will battle one of the Koopa kids.  Jump on his head 3 times

to receive the magic wand to help the King go back to his old self again.

World 2 - Desert Land

In the Desert Land, you'll find yourself in a desert atmosphere filled with pyramids and even quick sand.

Jump on the koopa turtle and kick the shell to the right to break all the bricks and open up the pipe.

The hot desert features a very angry sun.  Be careful.  The sun actually comes down to try to hit you.

World 3 - Water Land

Water Land features stages that has you swimming.  If you have the frog suit, you can swim a lot

better and faster.

World 4 - Giant Land

Giant Land features the same enemies but in a bulkier size.

World 5 - Sky Land

Sky Land features stages that involve high places.

RACCOON SUIT

The raccoon suit is a powerful suit to have.  Not only does it let you have unlimited flight, but if

you press down and B, you turn into a statue which makes you invincible to your enemies for a

few seconds.

World 6 - Ice Land

Ice Land has you on slippery ice.  Because of the terrible control of this game, any Stage of any

World makes you feel like you're waking on ice.

World 7 - Pipe Land

Pipe Land has stages filled with pipes everywhere!

WARP

When you use your whistles, you are taken to World 9 warp zone, which lets you warp to different

Worlds.

World 8 - Dark Land

Dark Land is the last World that you encounter.  This is by far the hardest and most frustrating World to beat.  Good luck!

Game Evaluation

PROS:

CONS:

                                                               GRADES

Graphics:

B-

The graphics in this game aren't going to impress you.  But it does get a good grade because the graphics are better than those in the previous Mario Bros. games.  Some gamers might find the graphics a little too "cutesy", however.

Sound:

C

The sound effects and music are mediocre at best.  Nothing special here.

Control:

D+

The control in this game is just HORRIBLE.  Mario and Luigi feel like they are constantly walking on ice, thanks to the overzealous velocity that the programmers put in.

Fun Factor:

A

The terrible control prevents this game from receiving an A+ for fun factor.  Other than that, this game is very fun to play, especially with two players.

Overall: B- Adding all the grades together, this game gets a B-.  Although it had some bad elements in it, this game was definitely worth adding to your NES library.  Definitely a classic.

The Future of Super Mario Bros. 3

If you own a GameBoy Advance, you already know that Super Mario 2 and Super Mario 4 have made their

way on that hand held system.  As far as Super Mario Bros. 3, who knows, it might make it to the GBA as

well.
